They were trailblazers, becoming the first Indian team to capture the Calcutta Football League title in 1934, and they went on to secure back-to-back victories in 1937 and 1938. Their dominance extended to winning both the League and the IFA Shield in 1936, showcasing their exceptional talent. Their combined efforts resulted in significant achievements, including reclaiming the Calcutta League title after a 40-year break and securing consecutive wins in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Though they narrowly missed the I-League title in 2021-2022, Mohammedan Sporting’s consistent performance reflects their resurgence and determination to regain their position as a football powerhouse in Indian football.
Under Chernyshov’s guidance and with an outstanding performance from the entire team, the Black and White Brigade secured the ultimate prize and joined East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the ISL, a dream they had long awaited.
“I’ve been with the team for four years, and this victory is for all of us. Not just our players, but every member of the support staff and our fans deserve credit for this triumph,” said Dipendu Biswas, former player and current team manager of Mohammedan.
Biswas became emotional after Mohammedan clinched the title. “I can’t put into words what this victory means to us. These tears are of joy. Now that we’ve been promoted to the ISL, our next goal is to perform well and qualify for the AFC Cup.”
The entire team will arrive in Kolkata amidst a jubilant crowd at 7 pm and will lift the I-League trophy after their final home game on April 13th against Delhi FC, most likely at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium.
